National organisations providing energy advice

Energy Saving Trust – the Energy Saving Trust is an independent organisation working to address the climate emergency. You can find lots of advice on energy in the home, including on insulation, draught proofing, heat pumps and PV.

NESTA  – the UK’s innovation agency for social good. Their information includes heat pumps and they run a scheme to visit a heat pump installation.

Centre for Alternative Technology – an internationally renowned environmental charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based in Powys, Mid Wales. Lots of resources including sustainability advice.

Centre for Sustainable Energy – supporting people and organisations across the UK to tackle the climate emergency and end the suffering caused by cold homes

Oxfordshire County Council energy saver app – see which household devices use most energy; energy-saving tips based on your usage; compare energy deals and switch in minute; chance to join government trial of affordable solar

Oxford low carbon hub – a social enterprise generating income from renewable energy and investing in further carbon cutting projects. Includes Cosy Homes Oxfordshire, to help you make your home comfortable, reduce energy bills and carbon emissions.

Low Carbon Oxford North – a charity set up by local residents to support ambitious CO2 cuts through local action. Lots of helpful guides and information events e.g. house warming including insulation, renewables, windows and doors, draught proofing.

National Self Build and Renovation Centre – centre for home building advice, for self build and home improvers. Based on the edge of Swindon, they hold frequent events where you can go along and find out more about home energy.

National government

DESNZ (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero) – UK government department responsible for energy policy. This is a useful site to see government policy, guidance, and consultations directly. Includes:

Ofgem – Great Britain’s energy regulator and Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) administrator, plus lots of other useful information on energy efficiency and the UK energy system more generally including price caps.

UK Climate Change Committee – advises the UK and devolved governments on emissions targets and reports to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Read the latest assessments of progress in meeting the UK’s climate change targets.

Reading in more depth about the energy system and climate change in the UK

Energy Systems Catapult – government funded organisation supporting energy innovation including net zero homes. Technical reports aimed at innovators, energy suppliers, local and national government, but interesting if you want to read about the latest findings and projects underway.

UK Energy Research Centre – carries out world-class, interdisciplinary research into sustainable future energy systems. An academic-led research centre looking at the whole energy system. Lots of cutting-edge interesting reports to read which provide an introduction to the latest thinking and the wealth of energy systems research in UK universities and other organisations.

Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations – academic research centre looking at the role of people in tackling climate change. Lots of accessible briefings and reports, as well as academic output. 

Global energy system

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. (Currently chaired by British academic Sir Jim Skea). Read their reports developed by experts from all over the world. This is the information that feeds in the COPs (Committee of the Parties) UN conferences where governments try to reach globahttps://www.youtube.com/@HeatGeekl agreements to reduce climate change.International Energy Agency – works with governments and industry to shape a secure and sustainable energy future for all.
