Growing Projects

Sustainable Wantage manages 3 outdoor spaces within the Wantage and Grove area. Our objective is to ensure that these havens of wildlife are cared for, that the biodiversity in each of them improves, and in the case of the Millbrook Community Plot, that residents have the opportunity to help themselves to produce grown in the garden by members and volunteers.

Top Lock Meadow
The objective of this project on Mably Way is to provide an area where residents can come and enjoy an attractive wildflower meadow that contains a range of different natural habitats and that creates a haven for different species of wildlife. This area was set up with support from Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment and is looked after by volunteers.

Millbrook Community Plot
Next to the Bottle Top in Millbrook Square in Grove, you’ll find this community plot. Volunteers from Sustainable Wantage and the local Co-op cleared the ground and the area is now planted with a range of different fruit and nut trees. The trees were purchased with a kind donation from Mole Valley Commercial Ltd and in the late summer and autumn the produce that comes from them is free for community residents to enjoy.

Market Place Courtyard
Sustainable Wantage volunteers assembled this flower bed that can be found outside the Post Office Sorting Office just off the Market Square in Wantage. The materials needed to construct it were funded by contributions made to the Flowers Fund by local residents and the Wantage Town Council and the plants were donated by Charlton Garden Centre and the Market Garden, another Sustainable Wantage project. The objective is to provide some colour all the year round AND you can park your bike there if you are cycling into town.
